Your hair is your crowning glory, and one of the first things people notice about you. Limp hair with visible bald patches on the scalp, or thinning at the crown such that the scalp is visible, are embarrassing things to happen. You may have experienced hair loss or pattern baldness after moving to Dubai. But are you doomed to suffer the loss of your hair forever? Not at all – you can explore hair transplant surgery in Dubai.
What is hair transplant surgery? As the name suggests, a ‘hair transplant’ is a procedure to transplant hair from one part of the scalp or body to an area of the head or body that has thinning or reduced hair growth. It is most commonly used for receding hairlines, loss of eyebrows due to disease or medical treatment, and bald patches on the head. It is performed for both men and women, but more commonly for men. Hair transplants are often done for those who experience loss of hair on the head, eyebrows and eye lashes. The reasons for this hair loss are wide ranging, and include:
How is the procedure done? The doctor starts by cleaning the target area and numbing it with local anaesthetic. They may then start the transplanting procedure by using any of the following ways: #1 FUE Transplant: The Follicular Unit Extraction hair transplant removes single grafts from the donor site to be planted at the target area. The doctor makes small incisions to remove the donor hair graft with a punch tool, and immediately transplants the hair on the target area with another set of incisions. This is normally done for receding hairlines and to fill volume in small bald patches. #2 FUT Transplant: In this transplant, the surgeon uses the ‘strip hair transplantation’ method to extract hair from the back of the head or the sides. The ‘strip’ of hair is then dissected and grafts are prepared for the target areas. This surgery requires stitches. #3 Robotic Transplant: In this, a ‘robot’ identifies the hair for harvesting and also does the graft dissections with precise incisions. This procedure is an extremely accurate one provided the doctor knows how to work the robot. It does not leave scars and there is no need to stitch up the graft. The results are more natural as well. The doctor can check your scalp profile and recommend which of the three kinds of transplants you can choose. How much does it cost in Dubai? You can easily get a hair transplant in Dubai’s premium hair and beauty clinics, or from private hospitals with a dermatology department. Interestingly, the costing for hair transplant in Dubai is done per graft, and may increase if the number of grafts are more or if the grafts are obtained with difficulty. Usually, you will pay anything from AED 10 to 15 for a FUT transplant, while the FUE transplant can cost AED 15 to 20. Robotic hair transplants cost the most, generally starting at AED 25 per graft. Doctors usually estimate how many grafts might be needed before starting the surgery. The cost of the procedure also includes the doctor’s consultation and procedure fees, surgery room hire, and post-procedure care and medication (if required). Is it painful? The procedure is not painful since it is performed under anaesthesia. The doctor will prescribe pain control medication for a week after the procedure. You may feel some tightness in the treated area, but no pain if you take the medication as directed and do not touch the grafted areas. What is the post-procedure care like? Once the procedure is done, you must allow the grafts time to take root and grow natural hair from the scalp. You may see results in two or three months after the procedure. During the healing period, you may choose to cover the treated areas with a scarf or hat to protect them from the elements, and to shield yourself from questions about the sudden profusion of hair on your head. The results of the hair transplant surgery are permanent, but not seen till about 3 months after the procedure. The hair takes root and continues to grow for a full year till the results are permanent. But you must remember that:
Washing the hair with doctor-recommended shampoo and conditioner is a must. Also essential are consuming a healthy diet and drinking at least one litre of water every day to maintain scalp and hair health.
